My Christmas Wish List

What do I want for Christmas? Everything!

All the information, that is. Full disclosure. Robust annual reports for all airline programs, including performance data which will permit consumers to make meaningful comparisons among competing programs and, ultimately, to make informed choices.

In a word, I want transparency.

It's not likely to be under the tree. But with recent pressure brought to bear on the airlines from the Department of Transportation, it might be a realistic expectation for next year. Or the year after that. Read the full article here.

Best wishes to all Crier subscribers for whatever holidays you celebrate, and for the New Year.

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Hotel Programs" Forum, QF WP has posted a comprehensive list of 2007 Priority Club promotions.

And in the "Airline Programs" Forum, look for ronald's posting on AAdvantage miles for "specially marked cheese" and the follow-up posts in which it turns out that the cheese company ran out of miles before the specially marked packages were off the shelves.

And much more. Questions, answers? Post them to the Forum!

New Award Flexibility from Delta

Effective December 14, SkyMiles members may combine restricted and unrestricted awards, and coach and first-class awards, on the same itinerary. So, for example, members can book a domestic flight using restricted first class on the outbound and return using restricted coach. The price would be 35,000 miles (half the 45,000 miles normally required for a restricted first-class roundtrip, plus half the 25,000 miles for restricted coach).

Such award mixing and matching isn't new. Among the largest programs, US Airways permits Dividend Miles members to combine Mileage Saver (restricted), Premium (unrestricted), coach and first-class segments on the same itinerary for flights booked on usairways.com. And Northwest allows its members to combine restricted and unrestricted award segments, but not to mix classes of service.

But the new policy does give Delta a significant competitive advantage over American and United, which will hopefully spur them to match.

Let's not forget that this is a solution to a problem of Delta's own making: such mixing and matching wouldn't be necessary if it weren't for Delta's self-imposed capacity controls on lower-priced awards.

E-Miles Links Ads with Miles

Want ads with that?

Newly launched e-Miles links mileage collectors (who tend to be highly desirable customers) with companies wishing to market their products and services to them. In return for reading and responding to a marketer's message, consumers earn miles in the programs of Continental, Delta, Northwest, or US Airways.

According to the company, participants can earn 20-30 miles per minute spent viewing ads. Ads are offered to participants selectively, based on their member profile and preferences.

Note that miles are deposited into participants' accounts quarterly and only if 500 or more miles have accumulated, so don't expect instant gratification.

Second Stay Bonus at East Coast InterCons

Priority Club members will earn 30,000 bonus points (or 6,000 Delta miles) after every second qualifying stay at InterContinental hotels in Boston, Baltimore, New York and Washington, D.C., completed before March 31, 2007.

Registration is required.

Northwest Offers Bonus for Asia Flights

Through March 31, 2007, WorldPerks members can earn up to 10,000 bonus miles for roundtrip flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, or Nagoya.

Bonuses are 10,000 miles for World Business Class (fare classes J or C), 7,500 miles in full-fare coach (Y, B), or 5,000 miles in regular coach class (M, Q, V). Blackout dates: December 20, 2006, through January 10, 2007.

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

"Wishing everyone at the Crier much Holiday Cheer and many Thanks for all the tips and advice over this past year. And my hopes that 2007 will be a good one for those of us who spend alot of time on the road." [Michael P.]

"The seats on Spirit are so hard that a woman scratched the surface of her diamond by brushing it against the seat.

"Spirit seats may not be that hard but my backside is still sore from flying from O'Hare to Santo Domingo via Ft. Lauderdale and back. Why would any airline order new planes with extra hard seats? My boss was kind and wanted me to recover from my work related injury by planning the next four weeks flying on Southwest." [Steve S. - A frequent flyer]

"In case you have not heard, Northwest hired a merger consultant. I am still waiting for Air France's reaction to the US Airways activities." [Tom S.]
