The FrequentFlier Forum - Hot Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Airline Programs" Forum, DANIEL CAPLETTE may have waited too long to take advantage of the 150 miles Bose was offering as an incentive to watch a video promoting its noise-cancelling headphones: "I tried viewing the video, you can get all the way to play. But, when you click the play tab the small screen is just blank." (The promotion's terms and conditions do include the following: "Offer of 150 miles with online video view valid 9/30/09 through 10/14/09 while supplies last.")

And in the "Hotel Programs" Forum, Beer Man addresses KJG67's question about which option to choose in Hilton's latest bonus offer. (You have to register for one or the other, and they're not combinable.)

Questions, answers, opinions? Post them to the Forum!

United Will Offer Unlimited Complimentary Elite Upgrades

Beginning in the second quarter of 2010, United will provide its elite members and their traveling companions with "unlimited domestic upgrades" on flights within the continental U.S., Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Central America, and the Caribbean. They're unlimited only in theory, of course, since they're offered on a space-available basis.

Upgrade requests will be made automatically according to members' elite status, ticketed booking class, and time of request, as follows: 120 hours prior to departure for Global Services members; 100 hours in advance for 1K members; 72 hours for Premier Executive members; and 48 hours for Premier members. Complimentary upgrades will not be offered on United's three-class p.s. service between New York and Los Angeles or San Francisco.

The new elite benefit will replace the current 500-mile upgrade certificates. Upgrade certificates already issued can still be used during their full 12-month validity period.

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

We welcome reader feedback on issues related to travel generally and frequent flyer programs in particular. Please use this link to submit comments.

Holiday Fare Surcharges

"Just saw on my local news that Delta is going to start charging $10 more per ticket for travel during peak travel days... such as some during Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break.

"I haven't found anything on their website... thought you might investigate." [Amy]

[FrequentFlier.com replies - A number of airlines have indeed added surcharges to fares around the upcoming holidays. You won't find any announcements on the carriers' websites, but if you use a booking widget to make some test reservations, you'll see the increases.]

British Air Charging for Seat Assignments?

"I completely concur with Audrey K [in last week's newlstter] -- BA's latest move for seat assignment fees is very disappointing. You may like to review the attached link for more details, e.g. the fee varies between GBP 10 and 60 depending on the route.

"Keep up the good work!" [Phil B.]

Continental Blackout Dates

"We have frequent flyer miles through Continental Airlines. I would like to know which dates are considered blackout dates." [Lynn K.]

[FrequentFlier.com replies - The days when airlines published blackout dates for award travel are long gone. Now, most airlines use sophisticated "yield-management" software to increase or decrease the number of award seats offered on each and every flight, according to the number of unsold seats, time remaining to departure, and other variables. In short, to determine whether there are award seats available on a given day, you should first try the airline's award-booking application. And if there appear to be no seats available on the desired day, it's always worthwhile picking up the phone and calling the reservations number. Sometimes a customer-service agent can find a seat even when the airline's own website shows zero availability.]

Airline Seating Charts

"Where can I find seating charts for airlines when I fly?" [Howard S.]

[FrequentFlier.com replies - I can recommend two: SeatGuru (a sister site) and SeatExpert.]

Until next week...
