Members of ATA's Travel Awards program will now earn twice as many points for Hawaii flights, and points will remain active for twice as long.
Instead of the 500 points previously earned, members now earn 1,000 points for every roundtrip Hawaii flight. With the ongoing double-point offer for flights booked on ata.com, Hawaii roundtrips net 2,000 points.
More significantly -- and in keeping with the recent policy change at Southwest, ATA'S marketing partner -- all Travel Awards points earned from October 1 will be valid for 24 months. That's a big improvement over the previous 12-month lifetime of points, but still well short of the three-year expiration schedule currently in place at most major U.S. carriers. And whereas the life of most airline miles can be extended by making new transactions, Travel Awards points expire without recourse.

In one of the most blatantly consumer-unfriendly moves in recent memory, US Airways will reduce by half the period during which Dividend Miles members must have account activity in order to preserve the life of their miles. Compounding the injury, they are promoting a reactivation policy which borders on extortion.
In the company's own words: "Effective December 1, 2006, active membership status is based on having earned or redeemed miles within a consecutive 18 month period. With our new Mileage Reactivation Policy, Dividend Miles members have an opportunity to reinstate their Dividend Miles accounts to active status for an additional 18 months for a $50 processing fee and reactivation fee of $.01 per mile. If members do not extend with this reactivation option, the Dividend Miles account will be closed and all miles forfeited.
"Members who have no account activity for a consecutive 36 month period will have their accounts closed and will forfeit all miles in their accounts. Once forfeited, miles cannot be reinstated."
Minimize costs; maximize revenues. That's one road to business success. Another approach is to treat customers with care and respect. In this case, US Air has chosen to focus on the former rather than the latter. Bottom line: bad move.

The "Everything Counts" promotion is billed as a new opportunity for Dividend Miles members to earn extra elite-qualifying miles.
Between October 1 and December 31, miles earned by Dividend Miles members for transactions with more than 50 program partners count toward earning elite status for 2007. The list of participating partners includes most hotels and car rental companies.
Current elites must be wildly ambivalent about this offer. On the one hand, it may represent an opportunity to upgrade from a lower to a higher elite tier. On the other hand, new elite members who gain status as a result of this promo will represent additional competition for the few available elite upgrades. We can only hope that US Air has done the math and that their system can absorb new elite members without degrading the benefits longstanding elites earned and deserve.
