Poor Profits Make for Happy Consumers
============================

So far, 4 of the major U.S. airlines have reported dismal second-quarter earnings, due to a triple whammy of weak demand, high fuel prices and escalating labor costs. American, United and US Airways reported steep losses while Continental managed a modest profit, albeit 70% lower than last year's. With the exception of Southwest, similarly lackluster results are expected to be reported by other carriers over the next few days.

The silver lining for travelers: you can expect continued fare discounting and aggressive frequent flyer-mile promotions to fill those empty seats.
