This Week's Travel Industry Newsbites

The big news of the week: US Airways is in "advanced" merger talks with America West.

Combining the nation's 7th and 8th largest airlines would result in the new airline's replacing Southwest as the 6th largest airline, and create a major national discount carrier which, at least in theory, could give Southwest a run for its money.

Will the combo lift struggling US Air out of its funk; or will US Air's bad corporate genes and dispirited workforce drag America West into the financial abyss?

In what could be a marriage made in heaven, or in hell, we may be treated to the spectacle of 1 of the industry's best managed carriers linking up with 1 of the worst. Think "Beauty Marries the Beast."

Earnings reports for the first quarter of 2005 are trickling in, led by Southwest's announcement of a $76 million profit, up from $26 million for the same period in 2004 and the carrier's 56th consecutive quarterly profit.

American posted a $162 million loss; Midwest lost $16 million; Continental lost $184 million; and America West had a profit of $34 million.

Analysts expect the airline industry to sustain losses of about $2 billion in the first quarter, on top of nearly $10 billion last year.

We'll have a full wrap-up when all the results are in.

FrequentFlier Forum Topics

As always, there's plenty of activity on the FrequentFlier Forum.

In the "Airline Programs" Forum, MASI1942 takes issue with my critique of Southwest's Rapid Rewards program, and in particular of the lapse of their online booking bonus (see "Miles & Points" below): "...I like SWA and the way that they do business. I think that the 'big' boys are just jealous of them. I own SWA stock and none of the other guys - don't want it! So, in closing - who is this guy Tim Winship? Who is he preaching to and who is listening?"

Also in the "Airline Programs" Forum, MiraK is a college student, just beginning the quest for miles: "I want to start building a relationship with an airline but all of the terminology and various options has my head spinning. What airline will be best for me? I am currently considering Continental's OnePass or United's Frequent Flyer Program as the top possibilities."

And in the "Hotel Programs" Forum, Robbfuzz wants to earn miles for award trips to Australia and is looking for credit card suggestions: "I have been reading on the different CC offers and it gets really confusing. I would like to build up miles/points on a CC because we do not fly much outside of going back to Australia. I can probably easily run at least $2k a month thru a CC and keep that paid off thru my business. I am not sure if I should look for a CC associated with a particular airline or one that is not."

And much more. Questions, answers? Post them to the Forum!

La Quinta, Baymont Merge Programs

The frequent stay program for customers of Baymont, Woodfield Suites and Budgetel hotels, Guest Ovations, has been merged with La Quinta's program, Returns.

In addition to hotel stays, gift certificates and airline miles, the resulting program, Returns, features free award stays at the more luxurious Wyndham hotel chain, which does not participate on the program's earning side.

The new Returns website is at http://www.yourreturns.com.

Southwest Deep-Sixes Booking Bonus

For Southwest Rapid Rewards members, April was the cruelest month. For the first time in 8 years, there was no bonus in place for bookings made on Southwest's website.

The double-credit online-booking bonus, recently reduced to a 1.5-credit bonus, was allowed to quietly lapse.

So long had the bonus been in place that most travelers thought of it as a permanent feature of the program. And indeed, it was a feature sorely needed by a program that in most respects is a poor cousin to the more robust programs on offer from the legacy carriers, and even from some discounters.

Where most programs offer hundreds of earning options and award travel worldwide on extensive networks of partner airlines, Southwest's program is limited to a mere handful of earning partners, and award travel is available only on Southwest.

And where most programs expire miles only if there's been no account activity for 36 months, Southwest summarily expires Rapid Rewards credits after a paltry 12 months.

Absent the bonus, Rapid Rewards is left with a single selling point: no capacity controls on awards. But absent the bonus, many Rapid Rewards members will never reach an award level -- now 8 roundtrips within 12 months -- so the benefit is academic at best, a cruel joke at worst.

C'mon Southwest, where's the Luv?

Discounted Awards on Ted

Mileage Plus members can save 10,000 miles on saver awards booked on Ted by Apr. 29 for travel by June 30, on flights between Chicago Midway and Washington Dulles or Denver and 23 cities beyond.

Bonus applies only to online award bookings.

READER RANTS & RAVES

Feedback from the Frontlines of Travel

"I just came across your site's mention that TWA mile were converted to AA Advantage miles after the merger. I had previously thought that my TWA miles (some 200,000) expired worthless. I have some old statements...what can I do now to collect my converted TWA miles and use them. Thanks for your timely response & help." (Bennie F.)

[The deadline for converting TWA miles to AAdvantage miles is long past.

To American's credit, they made a good faith effort to get the word out to Aviators members before and during the changeover. And they accepted conversion requests for quite awhile after the deadline had come and gone.]

Until next week...
