Car rentals are generally not a rich source of frequent flyer miles. The national rental-car companies have decided that miles are just too expensive and too ineffective to constitute a key part of their marketing efforts. For mileage-focused travelers, limited-time promotions like this one from Avis up the ante somewhat.
Between November 8 and December 31, American AAdvantage members can earn 250 bonus miles per day for Avis rentals at airport locations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Middle East, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
The bonus may be earned up to four times, for a maximum of 1,000 bonus miles after four rental days.
To earn the bonus, use coupon code MUAA013 and provide your AAdvantage number when booking.
“This offer is in addition to your everyday savings of up to 35 percent when you use AWD #K817179.”
Deal or No Deal The normal AAdvantage earning rate for Avis rentals is 50 miles per day. As incentives go, that’s pretty weak.
Add in the bonus and the daily earning increases to 300 miles. If the daily rental rate is $50, you’re earning six miles per $1 spent.
Put another way: If the miles are worth around 1.2 cents apiece, 250 miles are worth $3.60.
The bonus makes a bad situation better, but it’s hardly a game-changer.
If you’re looking for a more substantial rental-car bonus, consider National’s One-Two-Free promotion: a free rental day after two paid rentals of two or more days, through January 31, 2013.
