One of the sometimes overlooked benefits of the Citi AAdvantage credit cards is a discount on the prices of award travel to a selection of destinations that changes every three months.

The list of discounted routes for the third quarter has just been released.

Offers Details

Between July 1 and September 30, Citi AAdvantage cardholders can redeem fewer miles for restricted coach or first-class award travel to select destinations in the U.S. and Canada. The discount for round-trip awards varies according to the type of card, as follows:

  • 5,000-mile discount for Citi Gold AAdvantage cards, Citi AAdvantage American Express cards
  • 7,500-mile discount for Citi Executive AAdvantage World Elite MasterCards, Citi Platinum Select AAdvantage cards, Citi Select AAdvantage American Express cards, CitiBusiness AAdvantage cards

With the discounts, a round-trip coach award, normally 25,000 miles, is reduced to 20,000 or 17,500 miles. And a first-class award is reduced from the normal 50,000 miles to either 45,000 or 42,500 miles.

Blackout dates on discounted travel: July 3 – July 4; August 30 – September 2.

Deal or No Deal

If you’re an active AAdvantage member, you probably already have one of the AAdvantage-linked credit cards. The award discounts definitely add to the cards’ value.

It’s worth taking a few minutes every quarter to review the discounted flights and plan accordingly.

There a catch, however, which somewhat offsets the savings in miles with higher costs. To book travel at the discounted rates, you must call American’s reservations center, thereby incurring a $25 service charge.
